Thursday, 1/5 First Thursday Health Lecture, Tips for Seniors: How to Drive Better, Longer, Safer - Speaker: AAA's Laurie Cook. AUDITORIUM - 7:15 pm
Thursday, 1/12 Recital by Allen Huszti, baritone. Allen sings French songs by Gounod and Duparc, accompanied by Marian Lott on the piano. Although Gounod was better known as an opera composer, he is considered the “father” of the 19thcentury French mélodie or Art Song. Both performers are residents of Kendal at Oberlin. AUDITORIUM - 7:15 pm.
Friday, 1/13 Oberlin Con Jazz Combo performs. Led by Steve Becker, jazz guitar performance and English major at Oberlin, the group consists of piano, guitar, trumpet, sax, bass and drums. AUDITORIUM - 7:15 pm.
Tuesday, 1/17 Third Thursday Lecture (this month on a Tuesday) features Erik Inglis, Oberlin College associate professor of Medieval Art History, speaking on Medieval Misunderstandins of Medieval Art, AUDITORIUM - 7:15 pm.
Monday, 1/23 Land Preservation: It's for the Birds and Other Creatures - Andy McDowell and Kate Pilacky from Western Reserve Land Conservancy will give a brief overview of the more than 25,000 acres preserved in northern Ohio and the creatures that live there. Over 6,000 acres are in the Firelands region. These areas are critical habitat for such wildlife as herons, snowshoe hares, bobcats, bear and various snakes and reptiles Note: Once again, they will bring with them some special feathered friends from the Medina Raptor Center. AUDITORIUM - 7:15 pm.
Tuesday, 1/24 Recital: Robin Jenkins, a senior performance major in piano and organ, will play works by Beethoven, Debussy and Schumann.. AUDITORIUM - 7:15 pm.
Sunday, 1/29 Recital by Professor Salvatore Champagne, tenor and Oberlin Conservatory voice faculty, accompanied by Howard Lubin at the piano.. AUDITORIUM - 4:00pm
 

In our art galleries:

  • The Kendal Gallery opens a show by Mike Guyot on January 10th. The artist describes himself as an "architectural impressionist." His work is done freehand using a rapidograph ink pen, then finished with several layers of acrylic washes. There will be a reception with the artist on Friday, Jan. 20th in the Heiser Lounge.
  • The Nature of Kendal appears in the Friends Gallery, showing photos that appear as the first slide on our daily Channel 19 events calendar in 2009-2011. On view are photos by Al Carroll, Vera Cooke, Jane Hannauer, Jim Helm, Scott Orcutt, Cate Schwaegerle and Paul Schwaegerle.  The show will be up through March 5.
  • The Community Art Walls feature Ed and Ruth Schwaegerle’s display of Japanese holiday cards, which will be followed on January 17 by handcrafted rugs and other items from the Oberlin Senior Center. As always, they will be for sale.

Friday, 2/10 Conversations with Community: Taxes, Taxes, Taxes - 2012. Joe Palmieri is Kendal's "go-to" person for tax questions. He will explain what Uncle Sam wants from us this year. AUDITORIUM - 4:00 pm.
Monday, 2/20 The Great Lakes Theater always brings superb productions. This time, an adaptation of Agatha Christie's first play - The Mysterious Affair at Stiles. It should be spell-binding, and fun! AUDITORIUM - 7:15 pm.
