Resident Bill Schreiner is part of the Horticulture committee. Joining our Community

Currently, for persons who wish to join Kendal at Oberlin at the independent living level, we offer three types of Residence and Care Agreements (contracts). The first is our original, comprehensive agreement and the second is a modified agreement for residents who choose to maintain a qualifying long term care insurance policy. The third option is a modified agreement with limited health services included in the regular fees. Expenses include an entry fee and an ongoing monthly fee. For more information about independent living in  Kendal's cottages and apartments, please contact Maggie Stark, Director of Admissions, 1-800-548-9469.

At this point in time, Kendal is unlikely to have direct admissions available to our Stephens Care Center for persons who require assisted living or nursing care at the time of entry. To inquire about direct entry to the Stephens Care Center, please contact our Social Services staff, at 1-800-548-9469, ext. 813.

The Comprehensive Agreement - Platinum

Our original contract offers one of the most comprehensive range of services available, with the security of knowing fees will not increase due to a change in level of care. For those who wish to minimize the risk of potentially high future health care costs, this approach offers the most protection. In addition to routine residential services, the agreement includes therapy services, wellness programs and coordination of health care services. Most importantly, it covers both short term and long term use of our Stephens Care Center, when assisted living and nursing care are needed, at no additional cost over what the resident would pay in independent living. Entry fees for this comprehensive package of services range from $92,000 to $463,500. Monthly fees range from $2,505 for a single occupancy studio accommodation to $6,181, the double occupancy rate for our largest new cottage, over 1,800 square feet.

The Modified Agreements - Gold & Silver

An increasing number of people now carry long term care insurance policies, which are designed to cover some of the costs associated with nursing home care. Kendal at Oberlin's Gold Plan Residence and Care Agreement is designed to work with such policies. This plan offers services similar to our original agreement, but for a period of time that coincides with the benefit period of the insurance policy, nursing care is not covered by the contract. Instead the resident is billed the prevailing daily rate for nursing care and it is expected that the insurance plus, if necessary, private resources will cover this cost. Kendal offers a significant reduction in the entry fee for residents who choose this option.

The Silver Residence and Care Agreement is for those who prefer to self-insure future long term health care costs. In addition to the residential services that are provided in all of our contract options, the entry and monthly fees will cover up to 100 days (after Medicare) of either assisted living or nursing home care in Kendal's Stephens Care Center. After that, residents will be billed the prevailing daily rate for those services as they are needed. Access to the Stephens Care Center is assured.

The Admissions Process

There may be a wait for cottages and apartments, therefore it is certainly wise to plan ahead. The first step in the admissions process is the Priority List, recommended for persons who are considering joining the community in either the near or distant future. There is a modest refundable deposit for each application and a nonrefundable processing fee.

As prospective residents get closer to considering a move to a Kendal cottage or apartment, we would ask them to join the Waiting /Ready List, completing the application process by providing additional personal, financial and medical history information. Because of the health care services our agreements cover, one must be able to live safely in a cottage or apartment when a specific contract for services is offered. An admissions interview is part of the process and will include thorough review of the contract and a baseline medical review.

Equal Housing OpportunityOnce an agreement for a specific cottage or apartment is offered and accepted, future residents have up to 90 days to move to Kendal, before the entry fee is due in full and the monthly fee begins.
