“The John Bartram Arboretum is deeply grateful to receive this ArbNet 5th Anniversary Grant, and to be one of only six grant recipients is a tremendous honor.” said Larry Dunn, Chair of the Kendal resident Arboretum Committee. “We will use the grant monies to partially fund a pilot test to remedy the issue of tree root suffocation, with training and assistance from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Urban Forestry program.” Dunn continued. The arboretum will also host a workshop, in collaboration with the Ohio Independent Arborists Association, on remediation and revitalization methods for tree care professionals from around the Northeast Ohio region.

“The John Bartram Arboretum at Kendal at Oberlin was selected largely because its project was found to be collaborative, innovative, and have a broad impact on the arboretum community,” said Nicole Cavender, vice president of science and conservation at The Morton Arboretum. “ArbNet is proud to support projects that will not only educate visitors and advance tree conservation, but could also serve as blueprints for arboreta around the world.“

In addition to The John Bartram Arboretum at Kendal at Oberlin, the ArbNet 5th Anniversary Capacity Building Grant recipients also include:

  • Welkinweir Arboretum, Pottstown, Pennsylvania
  • Vallarta Botanical Garden, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
  • Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum, Atlanta, Georgia
  • The Belton Memorial Park Arboretum, Belton, Missouri
  • Southern New Hampshire University Arboretum, Manchester, New Hampshire
