2019 Arbor Day Program

The John Bartram Arboretum at Kendal at Oberlin will host its 4th annual Arbor Day program on Wednesday, April 24, beginning at 9:30 a.m. on the Kendal Campus, 600 Kendal Drive, Oberlin, Ohio.

The program is free and open to the public.

ARBOR DAY PROGRAM SCHEDULE:

  • 9:30 AM – Coffee and refreshments (Heiser Auditorium)
  • 10:00 AM – Program: “Oberlin’s Tree Program” – Jeff Baumann and “Urban Forestry: A Community Effort” – Colby Sattler
  • 12:00 PM – Lunch Break
  • 1:00 PM – Tree Planting and Tree Walk (meet at Heiser front desk)

Speakers to Discuss Local Forestry Projects

Jeff Baumann, Oberlin’s Public Works Director, oversees six divisions of city government, including Building and Grounds, which is responsible for planting, pruning, and removing curb lawn trees throughout the city. He will discuss the Black River Watershed Canopy Restoration grant that Oberlin has received to plant trees.

Arbor Day Event - Speaker Coby SattlerColby Sattler (pictured at left), Urban Forestry and Natural Resources Manager of the Western Reserve Land Conservancy, leads their urban reforestation efforts throughout the Greater Cleveland area. He works closely with non-profits, foundations, and other community organizations, strategically planting trees based on existing knowledge and tree inventories. Colby, who is a Certified Arborist, also conducts training workshops on proper tree care and develops natural resource projects. He will speak about “Urban Forestry: A Community Effort,” describing the efforts of the Conservancy to reforest the city of Cleveland.

About the Arboretum

This year’s Arbor Day tree planting and tree walk will take place in The John Bartram Arboretum at Kendal at Oberlin, which is a 100-acre, 1,000-tree arboretum that was accredited as a Level I Arboretum by ArbNet in 2015. The arboretum is committed to educating the community about the cultivation of trees and shrubs and to serving as a model of responsible urban arboriculture.
