Oberlin is One of Kiplinger's "Smart Places to Retire"

A feature article posted July 3 on the website of Kiplinger Personal Finance includes Oberlin, Ohio on its list of “12 Smart Places to Retire.” Proximity of Oberlin College and a vibrant Kendal life plan community in the town of Oberlin are noted as reasons to consider this a retirement destination.

The article, compiled by the editors of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, notes that each of the cities and towns listed is “home to at least one college or university that offers access to concerts, interesting lectures and sports (without final exams and 8 a.m. French class).” In addition, most of the cities have a “moderate cost of living” and are located in states that “exempt all or a portion of retirement income from taxes.”

The other major factor common among those cites listed is access to high-quality health care. All of the cities listed “have at least one hospital nearby that has received four or five stars—the highest rating—from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid.”

The profile of Oberlin, states that “at Kendal at Oberlin, a retirement community a mile away from the main [Oberlin College] campus, students rehearse campus productions before an audience of Kendal residents. The community also owns a duplex that houses up to four student volunteers, who receive free room and board in exchange for volunteering 15 hours a week during the school year.”
