Community Update for week of 11/14/2022

Update to residents on 11/15/2022

CARF Results

The CARF Accreditation Survey visit that occurs every 5 years was onsite Nov. 7-9. After 2.5 days of interviews and the CARF team reviewing more than 1,600 uploaded documents, the Surveyors provided a verbal Exit Report to a full auditorium and KOTV audience. Their report will now be forwarded to CA+RF International. We should receive a final written report in about a month. Their preliminary report rated 1,942 Standards spread over 20 distinct categories. All 20 categories were rated in conformance (No Recommendations).  This is an exceptional outcome (matching our 2007 Report) and the result of the full community contributing to this effort. This Standards Manual is provided in the library where you can see the full detail of all 20 CARF sections. In addition, KaO did a self-study for each section, contributed to by many staff, residents and board in preparation. We are humbled by the kind words of the survey team. It took all of us, residents, staff, board and community partners working together to achieve this result. This collaboration is on-going.

Thank you for YOUR part in making our community the unique place it is.   A YouTube link to the video report is provided here. It was a full 45 minutes.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gYo0zhTijw

On Monday staff were treated to favorite foods from Lorenzo’s  to celebrate not only CARF but also the two deficiency-free Department of Health Annual Surveys this year. Plans are underway with a small resident committee to offer a Lorenzo’s Order Day at Kendal in the weeks ahead. Stay tuned.

Afternoon Exchange

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, Nov. 23, the day before Thanksgiving. While some folks will already be away for the holiday, we’ll still hold the meeting. We also will welcome a farewell visit by Rep. Joe Miller, District 56 to express his appreciation to his Kendal constituents and a chance for us to thank him for his service to District 56. We plan to recognize at least one Pandemic Hero from the larger community as well.

We will continue to provide this meeting using KOTV too.

Veterans Day Program

A big shout out to our Veterans. This past Friday Kendal had a bus full of residents participate in the Oberlin Program coordinated by the Oberlin Schools, City and Oberlin College. Kendal contributors included Rich Kish who created a PowerPoint featuring photos from Rich, Bob Randle and Tom Morgan’s service days. In addition, on display was Roger Cooper’s Navy uniform and a model plane from the Air Force flown by Bob Randel. It was heartwarming to see the response from citizens recognizing Veteran’s Day.

Our Marketing Department previously produced a podcast series called “Memories of WWII”  with four residents recollecting their experience during the war. You can listen to it here: https://kao.kendal.org/podcasts/

Year End Tax Tips

A video recording was made of Vance DeBouter’s excellent program, in which he discussed year-end tax advice – especially for seniors. It is available to Kendal people via a private link: https://youtu.be/_lalDPATFhc. Thank you Grace Tompos and Tom Konkoly for arranging this presentation. Thank you Joyce Benjamin for editing the recording.

Voter Turnout

On Election Day, 223 people voted at Kendal at Oberlin. We are pleased to be a polling station and an active part of the greater community.

Citizen Input Requested

The City of Oberlin is looking for input from community members on their comprehensive planning process. The City has commissioned the Downtown Strategies group to develop a 5-year strategic plan for Oberlin’s downtown as a part of the Community Action Plan. They are asking for the community to complete a survey to help guide their work. https://oberlincomprehensiveplan.com/
