December 30, 2020: Update to Residents

First 254 Residents Receive First Dosage of the COVID-19 Vaccine!

Kendal resident gets COVID-19 vaccine

Today was a milestone day and time to celebrate as our first 254 residents received the first dosage of the COVID-19 Vaccine! This is a significant step for our campus and the greater community advancing to a post-pandemic world.

We are also pleased to announce as follow-up from yesterday that Walgreens has agreed to provide more vaccine tomorrow, so we are scheduling Independent Living residents whose registrations via hard copy or SurveyMonkey were not received. Health and Wellness Clinic staff will be calling you by the end of the day to confirm your appointment for tomorrow late morning/early afternoon.

Tomorrow we are planning another 195 vaccinations between Independent Living residents (26), Stephens Care Center residents (57) and Kendal staff (110).  By the end of tomorrow, nearly 450 individuals (337 residents and 110 staff-estimated) from our community will have received their first vaccination. Some residents and a number of Kendal staff opted to receive the first dosage of the vaccination on January 20/21 respectfully. Their second dosage will be administered on February 10/11.

If you are an Independent Living resident still waiting to be scheduled, please contact Natasha Miller (440-775-9819). She can confirm your time tomorrow or ensure you are scheduled for January 20. All IL residents wanting the vaccine will receive it on one of those two dates.

CDC Form for SMART PHONES

The handout you receive when vaccinated advises you of a smart phone tool that is totally voluntary to use. It is intended to help the CDC and you track symptoms after you get your vaccination, plus a reminder by text for your 2nd vaccination. It notes under how you can participate as being voluntary.

Using a browser, it will allow you to register, but if you do not have a smart phone this tool will not work. Since Kendal will remind you of your 2nd vaccination and address any side effects through our Health and Wellness Clinic, it is not essential to use it. The tool takes you to the website for CDC; it is not an app.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Information on Vaccines

New COVID-19 Variants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Information about the characteristics of these variants is rapidly emerging. Scientists are working to learn more about how easily they might spread, whether they could cause more severe illness, and whether currently authorized vaccines will protect people against them. Currently, there is no evidence that these variants cause more severe illness or increased risk of death.

No Update on Friday

Due to the New Year’s Day holiday, there will be no Nightly Update on Friday. Our next Nightly Update will be Monday, January 4. If there is breaking news beforehand, we will send that out.

Johnny Comes Calling on Thursday this Week

Because of their busy day, they will be making a delivery at 9am instead of 10am. Please make a note of this to arrive timely. Because of vaccinations taking place at Heiser, we ask you to arrive closely to 9am and then to depart promptly.

Enjoy Jara Dell’s Marimba Concert!

I typically bring in my marimba this time of year to share some holiday music with the residents. I know some staff also have enjoyed seeing this large instrument played, so since I have learned (a bit) of audio and video lately, I thought I’d share my video of playing marimba. The video is 40 minutes long, and by no means a professional video, but it is my way of spreading some holiday cheer.

Enjoy! I hope you have had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year! Yay 2021! –Jara (Kendal’s Music Therapist)

Lorenzo’s Pizza Party

Pizza orders have started to flow in as of today and are now due on THURSDAY at 3pm due to the holiday. Delivery will be next week, January 5 and 6 (Tuesday and Wednesday).

December 29, 2020: SPECIAL EDITION Update to Residents

First COVID-19 Vaccination Appointments Total 422!

sticker - I Got the Vaccine

Kendal at Oberlin is getting ready for its first round of COVID-19 vaccinations on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

We want to thank everyone for your patience yesterday and today as we scheduled 254 Independent Resident Vaccination Appointments for Wednesday, 111 Staff Appointments for Thursday, and additionally we have planned for 57 vaccinations for residents in the Stephens Care Center also on Thursday!

Given the short notice from Walgreens and the holiday weekend, it does appear that about 5% of resident responses either by SurveyMonkey or hard copy were not registered. We are researching the cause of this glitch; we sincerely apologize if this impacted you.

Because of the overwhelming response and this glitch, we were not able to accommodate everyone that was hoping to be in this first vaccination clinic, but not to worry because we will make sure you are scheduled for the second vaccination clinics on January 20 and 21. All Independent Living residents that were scheduled in this first vaccination clinic would have received a goldenrod appointment form in their inhouse mailbox either yesterday or today. If you did not receive a goldenrod appointment form and you indicated you want the vaccine, we will plan to schedule you on January 20. You may call or email Natasha Miller next week at (440) 775-9819 to ensure your name is on our list for that schedule.

We also had a larger number of staff members requesting an appointment today; unfortunately, we needed to send our firm numbers to Walgreens earlier. We will make sure other staff who want the COVID-19 Vaccine are scheduled for January 21. Please contact Michele Tarsitano-Amato next week at (440) 775-9890 if you would like to verify you are on our list for that schedule.

Afternoon Exchange with Barbara: Wednesday, December 30, by Zoom or KOTV

Join Zoom Meeting – Meeting ID: 921 4392 7958 – One tap mobile, +13126266799,,92143927958# US (Chicago). NOTE: Next week we return to our regular schedule on Thursday, January 7, 2021.

Reminders for the Independent Living COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic on Wednesday

  • Come to the Auditorium only a few minutes before your scheduled appointment. The schedule is very tight and we want to manage the gathered size of the group.
  • Bring your Walgreens Vaccination Consent Form with Sections A-1, A-2 and C completed ONLY. Other sections will need to be completed at the time of the vaccination. If you did not receive a vaccination form, please email Stacy Terrell, or call 440-775-9811.
  • Complete what you can on Section C, the Insurance Section on the Vaccination Form. If you have questions for completing Section C, please contact Donna Weber at 440-775-9064. Donna will be available Wednesday located next to the Vaccination Registration to review Section C and answer any last-minute questions you may have.
  • Health and Wellness Clinic Staff will be present to assist you with registration and to monitor you in the Fox and Fell after you receive your vaccination.
  • Please do not come if you are not feeling well, have a fever, or are exhibiting any respiratory symptoms that morning.
  • Make sure to come wearing your mask.
  • When waiting for the immunization, please practice appropriate social-distancing guidelines, maintaining at least 6 feet of distance from others.
  • Walgreens clinic team members or Kendal staff will assess for signs of illness, which may include asking screening questions or taking your temperature using the touch-free digital thermometer. Immunization will be deferred if participants are sick or have a fever.
  • If possible, you should wear clothing that allows the immunizer to easily access your shoulder area for a more efficient vaccination process.
  • Walgreens clinic team members will fill out a vaccination card for each recipient of the vaccine. Kendal will make a copy of this for our records.
  • As an added safety precaution after you receive your vaccination, you will be seated–socially distanced–in the Fox and Fell for 15-30 minutes to assure you have no adverse reaction, which has been extremely rare in trial groups. We will exceed 10 people in this waiting area; however, we will be social distancing and windows will be opened for added ventilation. Please consider bringing a sweater or light jacket for your wait time.
  • You will also be provided information on what to watch for during the following 1-2 weeks should you have other side effects—again–this is extremely rare.

COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics

  • First Clinic – Wednesday, December 30 – IL Residents, or Thursday, December 31 – SCC Residents and Staff (administering the 1st dosage)

December 28, 2020: Update to Residents

COVID Testing Update

As part of our continuing COVID-19 surveillance program, over 180 staff members participate in our mandatory COVID-19 testing. This number represents staff members associated with the Stephens Care Center and all Facility Services and Housekeeping staff that go into resident accommodations. Today was our 21st round of COVID testing performed at Kendal at Oberlin. Today three (3) Stephens Care Center staff members tested positive for COVID-19 in our routine testing. Additionally, one staff member with no resident contact also tested positive for COVID-19. These four staff members have been given professional advice and were immediately quarantined.

As a result, all Stephens Care Center residents were immediately tested for COVID-19 today. We are pleased to share that all tests were negative for COVID-19 among our Stephens Care Center residents. As part of our on-going protocol, all Stephens Care Center residents are monitored daily for signs and symptoms of COVID-19. In addition, with these newly discovered cases among staff, all Stephens Care Center residents will be tested twice per week for COVID-19 until we have gone a full two weeks with no new Stephens Care Center cases detected among staff or residents.

Our next round of Stephens Care Center resident and staff testing will be administered on Thursday, December 31. This is the same day that our first dosage of the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccination will be administered to staff and residents of the Stephens Care Center. Almost every Stephen Care Center resident or their POA has given approval to receive this vaccination. Thank you!

COVID-19 Vaccination Appointments

sticker - I Got the VaccineOver 250 Independent Living residents have requested to be included in our COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic on Wednesday, December 30. Due to the holiday and other pressing matters today, not all residents received their appointment time for Wednesday. We thank everyone for your patience and understanding. For residents that have not received their appointment slip yet, you will have it by tomorrow afternoon. If for some reason you do not receive it, please contact the Health and Wellness Clinic at 440-775-9819. If you did not register, you will have the opportunity prior to the January 20 Vaccination Clinic date. Details will be provided as we draw closer to that date.

  • Complete what you can on Section C, the Insurance Section on the Vaccination Form. If you have questions for completing Section C, please contact Donna Weber at 440-775-9064. Stephens Care Center Resident COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic

Thursday, December 31, beginning at 9am, Outside the Friends Corner Dining Room, residents will follow staff instructions when to come down on the day of the vaccinations.

  • Same as the IL resident reminders above, with staff guiding, directing and assisting with any forms that need to be completed.
  • Make sure to come wearing your mask.

Kendal at Oberlin is strongly encouraging all residents and staff to receive the COVID-19 Vaccination.

Kendal will not be given extra COVID-19 Vaccines – Some residents and staff have inquired about Kendal having additional COVID-19 vaccines available if a resident or staff member is out of town. Walgreens will not be able to leave any vaccine with us, and even if they did, we would have no way to safely store it due to the vaccine’s subzero (-70 C) storage requirements. If a resident or staff member is unable to make either the December or January COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic dates, they are encouraged to check with their health providers for other options.

  • First Clinic – Wednesday, December 30, or Thursday, December 31, (administering the 1st dosage)
  • Second Clinic – Wednesday, January 20, or Thursday, January 21, (administering 2nd dosage and 1st dosage for those that did not receive on December 31)
  • Third Clinic – Wednesday, February 10, or Thursday, February 11, (administering final 2nd dosage)

Langston Market Cancelled This Week on 12/30/2020

Proper distancing is key to the continued safety of our community, and we have determined that our best option is to skip the market to allow space for all the traffic the vaccine distribution will generate. Thanks for your continued support in these extraordinary times!

Johnny Comes Calling on Thursday this Week

You still have time to place an order before the new year by calling Terry at 440-774-8215. Because of their busy day, they will be making a delivery at 9am instead of 10am. Please make a note of this to arrive timely. Because of vaccinations taking place at Heiser, we ask you to arrive close to 9am and then to depart promptly.
