Anniversaries and a Historic Decision

Friday, June 26, 2015 will be a day to remember for two Kendal at Oberlin couples celebrating a combined 100th anniversary.  Also significant because this was the same day the Supreme Court delivered their ruling on same-sex marriage. Ira and Priscilla Steinberg and Ted Nowick and Robert Taylor share an anniversary…the Steinbergs their 60th and Nowick/Taylor their 40th.

The celebration began at Kendal at Oberlin, with family and close friends for dinner.  The Steinberg’s youngest son, Ethan, surprised them by flying in for the day from Los Angeles.

There were funny and reminiscing champagne toasts, but the one that will forever mark the day is that given by Robert Taylor.  His toast was the reading of the last paragraph of the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide.  A decision made on this special anniversary date.

In response to the decision, a Kendal resident brought a rainbow flag, a symbol of the international LGBT rights movement, to display in the Kendal lounge, where the two couples had invited all Kendal residents to join them for a gelato party after dinner.  Much celebrating followed.

Priscilla Steinberg ended the evening with these words, “It’s been a joyful and historic occasion, and I look forward to a combined 110th anniversary in 2025.  Who knows what that might bring!”
