July 7, 2021 —Opening on December 11th the work of Archived Artist Marihatt, titled Life Reflected, Marihatt at Kendal is on exhibit in the Kendal Gallery.
Marihatt was known for her large-scale oil and acrylic paintings, which highlight her appreciation of color and Japanese aesthetics. The paintings in this show are examples of the artist’s mature style, inspired by reflections in a tranquil koi pond outside of Osaka. Note that the images are reflections, so may appear upside down. Elements of poetry and mathematics are combined with natural imagery in these works. Several of them include verse by E. E. Cummings and Cleveland poet Christopher Franke, with whom Marihatt frequently collaborated.
Marihatt (1945-2010) was born in Winterthur, Switzerland. Her first name was Adele, but, as an artist, she used only her last name. She studied medicine and physiology, earning a master’s degree in 1968 from the University of Basel. Rather than become a physician, she chose to undertake a career as an artist – the only field she “ever really wanted to pursue.”
Marihatt moved to New York with her husband, Dr. Vincent Monnier, in 1982 and from there to Cleveland in 1997. Largely self-taught, she exhibited extensively, and her work has been shown in galleries and museums internationally, as well as being included in private collections throughout Ohio and in New York, Bern, Geneva, Paris, and Bergen. The Artists Archives of the Western Reserve made her an Archived Artist in 2002.
